Newfoundland Overview

This amphibious behemoth has an impressive track record for saving lives. Developed in Newfoundland to assist sailors, this dog knows how to use its brain and is not afraid to show it.

Weighing in at almost 150 pounds, this dog needs plenty of room and high upkeep. With a thick, arctic coat, this breed requires regular brushings, and it sheds greatly. Its heritage as a water dog is alive and well, so it is not afraid to dive in a nearby pond and track mud all over the house.

Those who are turned off by slobber should also look elsewhere, as this dog will mop the floor with the amount of drool it has.

They are vulnerable to overheating, so this dog will not live well in hot climates.

As an empathic dog, the Newfoundland requires the company of its family to be happy. If left alone, this dog will become anxious and destructive.

Families that have lots of land and time for attention will find the Newfoundland a massive ball of love.

Newfoundland History

It takes only one guess to nail the location of this dog’s origin. The Newfoundland was specially bred to work on ships high in the North Americas. Their partially webbed feet and super-thick coats gave them the ability to dive into arctic waters and retrieve various things, such as fishing nets, equipment, and even sailors who fell overboard.

Century-old myths sometimes describe shipwrecked crews being saved thanks to the presence of one Newfoundland. Other accounts relate their heroism saving children from frozen lakes that collapsed under their weight. Today, they make ideal family guardians, as they are gentle enough to care for a baby, but strong enough to drag a grown man through water.

Newfoundland Character

It is interesting that the majority of large dogs are better with children than smaller dogs, and the Newfoundland is no exception. With strong parenting instincts, it is gentle and patient enough to play with even the smallest of children.

Although it is not recommended, Newfoundlands are tolerant enough to let toddlers ride them like horses and damage their backs. If that is not testament to their kindness, nothing is.

Training should begin at puppyhood so that the dog will have self-control as an adult. Its size is not too much of a problem, because the Newfoundland is an infinitely reliable dog that loves pleasing its owners. Encouraging and rewarding training methods will make learning a breeze, and this breed has been known to perform in obedience competitions.

The only wary aspect of the dog is its size around smaller animals. In spite of its friendly demeanor, the Newfoundland could easily trample small pets by accident. If left alone too long, this breed can become anxious and destructive.

As a companion and a member of the family, few breeds are preferable than the Newfoundland.

Newfoundland Care

The Newfoundland requires daily brushing. The under coat is shed in the spring and fall and should be given extra attention at these times. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary to prevent stripping the coat of its' natural oils. Dry shampooing is best. They are prone to hip dysplasia, weight gain, and heart disease.

Newfoundland Training

Newfoundlands may be slightly difficult to train. They are extremely sensitive and will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed direction. They require and respond best to a calm, patient, and loving tone of voice. The Newfie does well with early basic obedience and socialization. They may be trained as a guard or work dog.
