Norwegian Elkhound Overview

The Norwegian Elkhound is better described as a working/companion breed than an actual hound. Borrowing heavily from its Spitz origin, this is a hardy breed that thrives in the company of humans. 

Its placement in the hound category comes from its original purpose of tracking elk and moose for their Viking owners. But the reality is that this is a multi-purpose dog, meant to protect, hunt, and herd. Because of this, an Elkhound needs consistent physical exertion to stay happy. 

Certainly not an apartment pet, this breed sheds profusely, requiring brushings twice a week and daily when shedding. While it is virtually immune to cold weather, this breed’s thick coat makes it difficult to live in hot environments. 

The Norwegian Elkhound is an energetic, affectionate companion for any owner that can keep up with it.

Norwegian Elkhound History

Although the Norwegian Elkhound is a member of the Spitz family, it is placed within the hound group due to its history tracking scents. Dating all the way to ancient times, the first evidence of the Elkhound’s existence comes from the Vikings. This breed was an essential multi-purpose tool for the Norwegian nomads, functioning as a hunter, guardian, fighter, and even nursemaid. 

But hunting moose and elk was their calling. Usually setting out in groups of two, the dogs would ambush their quarry and drive them towards the human hunters. They would sometimes have to run through thick forest and deep snow all day, proving their endurance and durability. 

The breed has remained relatively unchanged over the centuries. In the 19^th century breeding standards were established on most dogs, and some of the breeds went through such drastic changes, they almost completely abandoned their original qualities. But for the Norwegian Elkhound, only a few minor changes happened. This is because the Vikings had already taken so much care in perfecting the breed. 

The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1930, and it has maintained a modest following. In Scandinavia, however, the Elkhound is still proudly displayed in hunting competitions.

Norwegian Elkhound Character

While not a perfect dog by any means, the Norwegian Elkhound is famously good with children. It is said that one of the purposes of the Elkhound was to bunk with Viking children, using their thick coat to protect them from the cold. 

This is the consummate family pet, happily performing its duty as a human caretaker. It likes to drag its owner along while walking on a leash, but that can be taken care of with enough training. 

This breed is moderately easy to train, but they are notoriously hard-headed. This is a dog that forgets as quickly as it learns, so its long-term memory must be consistently reinforced through educational games or simple routines. 

They are very friendly around strangers, but are also good watchdogs; alerting their owners to approaching visitors. If properly socialized, Elkhounds do well with other pets, but they love to chase strange animals and they are somewhat aggressive around strange dogs. 

With consistent training and proper socialization, the Norwegian Elkhound is an ideal addition to an active family.
