The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is more representative of a Terrier than a Hound. It is bold, busy, intelligent, stubborn, and adventurous. This dog is high in energy and low on patience. But thankfully, due to its small build, its exercise requirements can be met with a vigorous play session or a long walk. It is well suited for small homes, but only insofar that it gets the attention and exercise it desires. Upkeep is fairly simple, only needing to be brushed once per week. The PBGV is an acceptable pet for any home, provided it is treated like a member of the family and not a mere dog.
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen History
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has the most descriptive name of any other dog breed. Petit means small; Basset means low, indicating its short legs; Griffon describes its rough coat; and Vendeen is the French region from which the dog originated. The rocky area in France, Vendeen, is notorious for its rough terrain and thick underbrush. In the 18th century, this breed was developed for the purpose of burrowing through thick brambles in pursuit of rabbits and other small game. Furthermore, it affords the speed and agility required for sprinting over tall and uneven rocks. Until the 20th century, the PBGV was considered a wire-coated Basset Hound, and it was presented in the show ring as such. It was later separated from the Basset Hound and placed in the same group as the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, a taller version of the PBGV. In 1990, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was given its own classification when it was recognized by the AKC. Today it is modestly popular for its carefree and scruffy personality.
Usually, a description of a Terrier’s personality includes the word “fiery.” Though the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a member of the hound group, its personality and appearance give it a Terrier-like quality. It is an inquisitive and bold hunter, always searching for a new adventure. It tends to dig, bark, and generally make its presence known. It is friendly and affectionate around children, strangers, and other dogs. But its hunting instinct will cause it to chase small, fast-moving animals. Obedience should not be an owner’s goal with the PBGV. This breed prefers to be stubborn and playful instead of willing to please. Yet the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a dog with charm and character to spare. Its spunky, lively personality should be encouraged with limitations rather than entirely broken.
This breed requires weekly brushing to remove loose and dead hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. The ears and teeth should be checked and cleaned on a consistent basis. The Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen is prone to eye abnormalities, aseptic meningitis, epilepsy, hip and elbow dysplasia, patella luxation, hypothyroidism, and food and skin allergies.
With their intelligence and desire to please the Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen is relatively easy to train. However, it is important they learn they are not the master. Early socialization and basic obedience are recommended. Training should be done with firmness, fairness, patience, repetition, consistency, and reward.
