Pointer Overview

As the simplicity of its name suggests, the Pointer is the archetype for all other pointers. It is built for work and competition, less for simple companionship. It is highly affectionate, and it is as playful as it is a workaholic. 

Its high energy and exercise requirements make it difficult for any owner who cannot provide enough work. Best suited for hunting or farm living, this breed needs to maintain almost perpetual exercise. 

Grooming requirements are low, only needing to be brushed when the owner sees fit. But that does not mean this dog is not high maintenance. It demands family companionship, and its constant need for exercise and mental stimulation make it too much of a hassle for the casual owner. 

Simply put, the Pointer is an excellent choice for anyone who can put it to good use.

Pointer History

Initially, the Pointer worked in concert with the Greyhound to hunt hare. The Pointer would use its keen senses to spot and point to its quarry. The Greyhound would then chase the hare down, and the hunt would be complete. 

But with the rise of bird-hunting in the 1700s, the Pointer went solo. It was very adept at locating birds for hunters, and it was infinitely reliable. 

Likely, the Pointer is the product of very specific breeding practices between other archetypal breeds, such as the Greyhound and Bloodhound. This breed became the mold for other pointers, as it was adopted in other countries and specialized accordingly. 

The breed’s heyday occurred in the 18^th and 19^th centuries, where they were favored for hunting on large aristocratic estates. To speak volumes for the breed, the Westminster Kennel Club was initially organized for the sole purpose of cultivating Pointers as field dogs. 

Today, the common career of the Pointer is to wow crowds in any number of competitions.

Pointer Character

The Pointer has a commonly unproblematic personality. It is friendly with strangers both human and animal, preferring to expend energy by taking advantage of a potentially new playmate. However, it may be too rowdy and playful for toddlers and the elderly. 

This is a dog that is built to run and work, and if its virtually endless amount of energy is not channeled properly, it will become bored, destructive, and stubborn. 

Training is a breeze, with one exception. Because of its history as an alert hunter, the Pointer is easily distracted by birds and other small animals it might regard as quarry. 

This breed demands companionship, either by human or animal, and it needs to be able to work closely with them on a daily basis. There is a specific place for the Pointer, and sadly, that place is not a suburban neighborhood. If it is not put to use in some sort of competition, it needs to live in a place where work is regularly given.

Pointer Care

Firm bristle brushing occasionally will suffice for this very easy to groom breed. The Pointer generally only needs to be bathed once every six months as they are fairly clean. Average shedding, a wipe with a dry towel or a rubber brush will remove much of the loose hair.

Pointer Training

The Pointer has a short attention span and should always have variety. Can be very willful and easily distracted so firm training is a must. Obedience classes at an early age are recommended.
