Poodle Overview

It is a common misconception that the Poodle (in all its forms) is a bratty, overly pampered canine which has more use as a fashion accessory than as a companion.

Truthfully, however, their extravagant styling and snobbish stereotype developed from a combination of human preference and popular culture. In fact, the Poodle is born as normal and friendly as any other dog, and it is truly a companion whose primary characteristic can be summarized in one word: versatility.

The breed’s massive coat, however, makes it a somewhat high maintenance animal. Because it does not properly shed, the Poodle must be brushed extensively on a daily basis.

Aside from the dog’s high upkeep, the Poodle is a fun-loving, compassionate highlight in family life.

Poodle History

Although the Poodle is of high fame across the world, its exact origins are unknown. Regarded as the French national dog, the word “Poodle” is of German descent.

It can be safely assumed that the Standard Poodle came first, with the Miniature and Toy following from specialized breeding. It can also be said that the dog’s purpose was a water dog, frequently put to use by fowlers across Europe.

Even in Spain, the dog is depicted in the art of Albrect Dürer, localizing the dog’s existence in the 15th and 16th centuries at least.

In England as well, the Poodle was admired by Queen Anne, and it is reported that she regularly entertained herself by watching a troupe of trained Poodles that danced.

Today the Standard, Miniature, and Toy Poodles are all viewed as part of the same breed, because they share characteristics too similar to justifiably separate.

Poodle Character

Essentially smaller versions of the Standard Poodle, the Miniature and Toy Poodles retain their great personalities even after their miniaturization.

Unfortunately, a majority of Poodles come ill-tempered and unpredictable due to the great number of puppy-mills in existence. Toy poodles feel the brunt of this overproduction, which is most likely the source of the American assumption that toy poodles are spoiled monsters that belong only in the hands of the eccentric and super-wealthy.

The reality is that well-bred Poodles are active, outgoing, and highly intelligent. Their extroverted nature allows friendly engagement with other dogs, typically initiating games as a form of persuasion.

Miniatures and Toys adore children as playmates, but their small stature and excitable tendencies make them vulnerable to rough play. These smaller dogs are also vulnerable to stress in loud, disorderly households.

The Standard Poodle is an accomplished gundog, originally bred to be a water retriever. The dog’s high capacity for learning make it a keen worker, living out its life as a service dog, sledding dog, hunting dog, or simply a reliable family pet.

Unless taught otherwise, the Standard’s curious nature will cause it to chase small animals like cats, squirrels, and other dogs, so it could become a handful for those expecting a sedentary and noble pet.

As one of the most trainable breeds, much of the Standard’s shortcomings can be disciplined right out of existence. The dog is so intelligent, in fact, that it becomes bored with regulated training; so new and creative teaching styles should be adopted for maximum success.

In spite of what popular culture may say, the Poodle is an active, obedient, and fun-loving dog that isn’t afraid to get its paws dirty.

Poodle Care

The Poodle requires extensive grooming. Professional clipping must be done every six to eight weeks. The coat may be groomed in three different styles: the Pet Clip, English Saddle, and Continental. Bathing should only be done when necessary using a mild shampoo. Daily brushing is highly recommended to prevent mats and tangles. It is important that the Poodles teeth and ears are checked and cleaned on a consistent basis. This breed is prone to cataracts, PRA, allergies, skin disorders, diabetes, epilepsy, and heart disease.

Poodle Training

Highly trainable and eager to please, the Poodle requires early socialization and obedience training. With their sensitive nature they do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. The Poodle does best with fairness, firmness, respect, patience, and consistency. They excel at learning tricks, including agility, retrieving, and competitive obedience.
