Portuguese Water Dog Overview

Originating from ancient stock, the Portuguese Water Dog is a working dog that is not afraid to get dirty. The breed’s curly hair and sometimes strange haircut tells of its possible genetic relation to the Poodle. 

This is a dog that has high energy, high intelligence, and high affection. Grooming requirements are moderate, and so is the ease of training. 

Suitably built for family life, the Water Dog is adaptable and happy wherever its family is. 

Portuguese Water Dog History

Both the Poodle and the Portuguese Water Dog share their lineage with herding dogs from Central Asia which were brought to Europe by way of Berber or Visigoth traders in the 5^th and 8^th centuries. 

The breed’s skill and aptitude in water gave it a special image, receiving credit for its ability to herd fish into nets. Its abilities were further tested in Portuguese waters as retrievers of tools and men who fell overboard. 

It did not take long for the breed to become an essential element in overseas travel, earning the very apropos name “The Dog of Water.” 

In the early 1900s, traditional fishing became obsolete in an economic sense, thus making the breed obsolete as well. Luckily, a wealthy enthusiast named Dr. Vasco Bensuade saved the breed by promoting it until a breed club was established. 

Following rough times and near extinction in the 1950s, the Portuguese Water Dog received AKC recognition in the early 1980s, and its popularity has been slowly rising ever since.

Portuguese Water Dog Character

Portuguese Water Dogs are very well-rounded, generally unproblematic pets. Training and exercise can typically be completed simultaneously, engaging in a rousing game of fetch or some other activity. 

Mental stimulation is key to this breed’s happiness, and it will not take kindly to lying about. 

Sticklers for cleanliness should look elsewhere, particularly if they live near a body of water. Water Dogs are not at all afraid of getting muddy while having a good swim. 

It is patient and behaved around children, and durable enough for unrestrained young ones. Strangers need not worry, as this dog is polite and reserved indoors. Also, it is rather friendly and easygoing around other dogs. 

Single owners would similarly enjoy this breed, provided they are energetic, adventurous, and considerate enough to bring the dog wherever they go. Portuguese Water Dogs are well-suited for most owners, both physically and mentally.

Portuguese Water Dog Care

Regular combing and brushing this breed is necessary. This breed has a very thick and close-knit coat which can easily get tangled or matted, so daily combing should be provided. Bathe only when necessary. Brushing with a wire brush or a fine-toothed comb would work best. Checking for burrs in the coat should be performed if this dog is to have free roam in a fenced yard.

Portuguese Water Dog Training

This being such an intelligent breed, he does well in obedience and agility. The Portuguese Water Dog is also very lively which makes him quite stubborn at times. Trainer must be firm yet gentle, but this breed is very willing to learn. Given the proper handler and training, this breed will do wonderfully.
