Rhodesian Ridgeback Overview

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a result of selective breeding, when European settlers in South Africa required a working dog that could withstand a climate of extreme temperature and lack of water. 

Moderately easy to train and exercise, this is a dog that needs an active owner. Adaptable to any environment, the only place this breed cannot live is within the confined walls of an apartment. 

Sometimes more of a guard dog than a working dog, this breed tends to be protective and loyal, but not aggressive or rowdy. 

Inexperienced owners should be wary of the Ridgeback, as they are a mishmash of retrievers, guard dogs, and other breeds, and are sometimes difficult to handle as a result.

Rhodesian Ridgeback History

When almost every dog failed under the harsh conditions of living in South Africa, European settlers put themselves to the task of designing an ideal breed that could hunt, retrieve, and perform big game hunting even in blistering heat. 

Luckily, the African natives already had a set of tribal hunting dogs which acted as the mold for producing the Ridgeback we know today. The end result was a surprisingly talented and versatile pet, and the ridge on its back, a characteristic inherited from the original tribal dog, became a mark of quality as the breed arrived in Europe. 

The Rhodesian prefix in the dog’s name comes from its eventual use in the region, where it was used for hunting lions. 

The animal’s immense versatility earned high regard among enthusiasts; and after its 1930 appearance in the U.S., its popularity grew in field trials and other dog shows. The Rhodesian Ridgeback received AKC recognition in the 1980s.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Character

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are the combination of Retrievers and Hounds, with the guard-like attributes of some large dogs. They are well-balanced and athletic hunters, while simultaneously keen sentinels. 

Its noble and utilitarian purpose has earned the reverence of many, being likened to the king of the jungle and nicknamed the “Lion Dog.” 

Families with children will enjoy this dog, as it is protective of all youngsters, not just the members of its family. The only concern is that they may be too rowdy for toddlers. In the company of strangers, it tends to stay back and “keep and eye out” rather than being openly aggressive and unwelcoming. 

Socialization is always important, but the Ridgeback has a natural affinity towards other dogs, usually behaving with the exception of occasional assertions of dominance. 

Ridgebacks are not the kind of dogs to take boredom lightly. Without enough exercise and training, this dog will feel underutilized and ignored, potentially causing headaches for its owners. 

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are not particularly difficult to manage. If given a home with plenty of backyard and an indoor room to sleep in, this breed will be happy knowing it is truly part of the family.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Care

Average shedding, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is easy to groom. A wipe down with a washcloth or dry towel will suffice and remove some loose hair. Bathing only when necessary, this breed's coat does not trap dirt well and is generally clean.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Training

Training must be gentle with this breed and start at an early age to avoid any further difficulties. The Rhodesian Ridgeback should have a firm handler, yet gentle training. Training must be consistent and straightforward if this breed is to excel. Good for watch dogging and hunting purposes. Hunting suits this breed very well.
