Rottweiler Overview

Unfortunately, the Rottweiler is one of those dogs that cannot escape bad press. The breed was originally created for the sake of guarding and herding, making it difficult around strange people and animals. The big reason for the dog’s poor reputation is that it is adopted by unskilled owners, like elderly people in search for a guard dog in bad neighborhoods. 

Without expert training, the Rottweiler is subject to unacceptably aggressive behavior. Not that the dog is evil or excessively violent, it simply has more assertive tendencies because of its history. 

Professional training coupled with early socialization has created many Rottweilers with hearts of gold. Rottweiler puppies are as adorable as any other, but make no mistake; these dogs grow up to be behemoths. 

Do not consider this dog unless you are willing to professionally train it from puppyhood. There is no need to make it an aggressive guard dog, its imposing physique alone will make any burglar-to-be think twice.

Rottweiler History

Although the Rottweiler’s official origin is undocumented, its powerful body structure creates the safe assumption that it was bred as a working dog. History shows the dog’s utilization in the armies of ancient Rome, though that particular dog was not a Rottweiler proper. 

The name of the dog originated in Germany as the dog we know today. No longer in the possession of a staunchly imperial power, the Roman drover dog became obsolete as a war dog, and the Rottweiler population declined close to extinction. Not until 1901 did the Rottweiler receive historical documentation again, displaying great aptitude as a police dog in Europe. 

By 1921, multiple European dog clubs were founded and over 3,000 Rottweilers were registered. After its acceptance in to the AKC, Rottweilers began to win multiple awards for obedience.

Rottweiler Character

Rottweilers have an aggressive instinct that is inescapable. Highly protective behavior coupled with a skittish attitude around other dogs make them unfit for novice owners. 

Plenty of exercise room and a strong, fenced backyard are key to keeping this dog fit and happy. Leashed walks are also necessary, as the Rottweiler has a strong chasing instinct and dominant attitude towards other dogs of the same gender. 

But there is a gentle side to this breed, as well. Highly intelligent and easily trainable, the Rottweiler is frequently used around the world as guide, therapy, and rescue dogs. In fact, the dog is so intelligent that it will learn bad habits if given the chance, contributing to its dangerous reputation. 

This is a popular dog in dangerous neighborhoods, and among the community of self-proclaimed “tough guys.” Because of this, the Rottweiler learns additional aggressive behavior, becoming more of a weapon than a loving pet. 

While not a dog for everyone, the Rottweiler is still a protective, highly intelligent dog that can be a sweetheart if raised correctly.

Rottweiler Care

The Rottweiler has a short and glossy coat that is relatively easy to groom. An average shedding breed, brushing with a firm bristle brush regularly should remove any excess hair or dead hairs. Bathing too often will remove the natural oils from the coat and/or skin. Dry shampooing is used by many Rottweiler owners as well as breeders so they are not to remove the essential oils in this breeds coat.

Rottweiler Training

Rottweilers are very eager to earn and will excel if given the opportunity. Obedience training is a must as this breed can become destructive without enough stimulation. A firm and dominant hand must be used when training this powerful breed. The Rottweiler is extremely intelligent and does well in many different sports and trials, but can also be stubborn. Obedience classes are recommended, but not always required.
