Saint Bernard Overview

The quintessential gentle giant, the Saint Bernard earned its stripes as a rescue dog in the Swiss Alps in the 17^th century. Many are drawn to own this dog because of its adorable depictions in popular culture. But in fact, this is a breed that has a maintenance requirement as huge as its body. Most homes simply cannot contain a dog of this size, as its adult weight ranges between 100 to 200 pounds. 

Their destructive tendencies are a product of their size, and not of their personality. Great shedders and slobberers extraordinaire, these great dogs mean mess, so they are not for owners who pride themselves on cleanliness. 

But the Saint Bernard is a famously well-behaved breed. In fact, the Saint Bernard is gentle and sedentary around even the smallest of children. Any owner with enough land and money to finance this dog’s upkeep will find the Saint Bernard an amazing pet.

Saint Bernard History

The origins of the Saint Bernard are heavily speculated, and it is said they came to Switzerland with the Roman army. Not until the first century A.D. did the massive dog get its name, when the Archdeacon Bernard de Menthon opened a hospice in the Alps as a refuge for travelers. But because a fire destroyed the hospice in the 1500s, many documents about the breed were destroyed. 

It is not until the 18^th century that these dogs appear in literature and manuals, describing the dog’s uncanny ability to track through the snow. The monastery where the dogs are trained has continued into the 21^st century. In 1887, an International Congress in Zurich, Germany established the official standard for the breed, and shortly thereafter, the American Saint Bernard Club was formed.

Thanks to the rise of modern rescue technology, the Saint Bernard’s job has waned from heroic rescuer to gentle family pet. Moderate exercise requirements make this dog content either playing fetch in the yard or spreading out by the couch watching TV with the family. 

The crowning factor for this dog is that it is the only large dog that does not pose a threat to small children because of its size. Saint Bernards are so gentle and self-aware, toddlers can ride on them like tiny horses, although that, of course, is not recommended. 

This huge breed has the soul of a toy dog, however, for it thrives on attention and companionship. Because of this, an inattentive family could inadvertently create a destructive, lonely, misbehaved dog. And with a dog this size, discipline is a must. While not an obedience champion, the Saint Bernard is a dog of average learning ability. 

Training should begin as early as possible, for it is imperative that dog this size learns self-control. These dogs are sensible and friendly with other animals if socialized at puppyhood, but it is recommended that the dog be kept from small animals to protect them from being trampled. 

The Saint Bernard is a world renown companion with infinite compassion and loyalty. If raised properly, the Saint Bernard can be an excellent member of the family.

Saint Bernard Care

The Saint Bernard's coat is shed twice a year. They require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush to keep hair around the home down to a minimal amount. Bathing should only be done when necessary using a mild shampoo to avoid stripping the coat of its essential oils. Their eyes and ears must be checked and cleaned regularly to keep them free of irritants. The Saint Bernard is prone to such health issues as wobbler syndrome, heart problems, skin disorders, and bloating. They have no tolerance for

hot weather.

Saint Bernard Training

The Saint Bernard must be socialized at an early age while they are still a manageable size. They have a strong desire to please their owner and will respond best to gentle, patient, firm, and consistent training. The Saint Bernard does well with elementary exercises and obedience such as heeling, sitting, and staying.
