Saluki Overview

One of the most ancient breeds, the Saluki is a dignified, quiet, and gentle dog. Its appearance is tall and thin, because they are choosy with what they eat. Owners of this breed are often accused of neglect on account of its skinny build. Grooming requirements are both simple and slightly complicated. Its short coat only needs periodic brushings to remove dead hair, but the longer hair on its head and tail needs to be regularly trimmed and combed. Though not excessively energetic, the Saluki needs daily exercise. A leashed jog around the block usually suffices, as well as a period of free-running in a well-fenced area. Because of the breed’s thin body and short coat, it has a relatively low tolerance for cold weather. While it certainly enjoys playing in the snow, it is essential that it has a place indoors. A soft bed is necessary for sleep, as a hard floor does not afford much comfort for such a bony body. The Saluki is an elegant, generally biddable companion; best suited for mature owners.

Saluki History

Because it is an ancient breed, it is understandable that the exact date of the Saluki’s creation is unknown. Evidence supports that this dog was around at the height of the ancient Egyptian empire, as its figure is depicted on royal and priestly tombs. The Saluki earned a special reputation in the Muslim world, which is a place that traditionally regards dogs as impure. This special breed was lovingly referred to as “the noble one,” which is mainly due to its role as a provider of food. The Saluki was primarily used by Bedouin nomads to hunt big and small game in the harsh desert. Because of this, it was given the privilege of sleeping with its master rather than outside. Furthermore, the act of interbreeding with other Salukis was considered disreputable, which explains the breed’s preservation over thousands of years. The breed found its way to the western world at the dawn of the 20th century, and it was granted AKC recognition in 1928. With the advent of modern hunting techniques, the Saluki’s purpose shifted from hunter to fashionable companion. Today, the breed is still used in hunting competitions, but its primary use is that of a house dog.

Saluki Character

The Saluki knows how to divide its time between the indoors and outdoors. Inside, the dog is polite, gentle and relaxed. Outside, it can run at high speeds if given the chance, and it has plenty of energy for a rousing game. Its temperament tends to be unproblematic. Around human strangers, it is reserved and often shy until it becomes accustomed to the new guest. With children, it is a friendly and patient companion. But its laid back demeanor and mature personality do not make for an ideal children’s playmate. Proper socialization makes for good behavior around other dogs, though it prefers not to engage in rough play. This is a hunter at heart, so there is little to prevent the Saluki from chasing a strange animal. It can be trained, but it should not be expected to forget its instinctive habits. This is a biddable dog, so training is moderately easy. With appropriate leadership, its behavior can improve even beyond its naturally laid-back tendencies. But it is important to note that this is a very sensitive dog, so harsh training methods will only make the process more difficult. While the Saluki makes an appropriate family pet, it is important to remember that it is not a children’s playmate. It is friendly and loyal, suited for any owner who can appreciate such a noble breed.

Saluki Care

The Saluki's coat is easy to care for. They require occasional combing and brushing, particularly on the feathered areas. Their ears need regular cleaning and inspection. In some cases this breed may be finicky about eating and will skip meals. Though they eat smaller portions, it is important to report loss of appetite to a veterinarian if this lasts more than 48 hours. The Saluki does not tolerate any type of anesthetic agents. They are also prone to bloating, hip dysplasia, skin problems, and cataracts.

The Saluki does best with early obedience and socialization training. Their deep- rooted instinct to hunt is not something that can be or should be discouraged. They are quick to learn, but do not like repetitive training. They prefer short and varied sessions. The Saluki does not respond to harsh discipline, but require love, kindness, and consistency.
