Samoyed Overview

The Samoyed’s history explains its modern-day requirements for exercise and grooming. Meant as an all-purpose dog for nomadic hunters in Siberia, this breed is known to be a hunter of reindeer and sometimes bears, as well as sled-puller and sentinel against dangerous arctic predators. 

They are meant to have an immensely close relationship to their owners, as they also had the job of sleeping next to children to keep them warm during the frigid nights. The result is an infinitely affectionate and loyal dog for families and singles. 

But this is an active breed, needing a family that can fulfill its need for mental and physical exercise. One look at its fur is all that is needed to know this dog excels in cold weather. It goes through a heavy shedding period every year, and it requires brushings 2-3 times weekly. 

Samoyeds are not outside dogs, as they need to be closely connected to their families to be happy. The Samoyed is a noble, often mischievous dog that thrives in active and affectionate families.

Samoyed History

This existence of this breed dates back to ancient times, so precise details about the Samoyed’s origins are the subject of speculation. When the Samoyed people of Asia migrated to the frozen Siberian tundra, they needed a dependent and powerful companion to protect from the harsh environment and assist in hunting for food. 

Samoyeds were generally the backbone of the nomads’ survival, even sleeping next to children to keep them warm. When the breed arrived in 19^th century England, it was heavily endorsed by Queen Alexandria, even the ones that were not pure white. Her participation in the breeding process became essential to how the dog is identified today, particularly in the area of its consistently white coat. 

The breed arrived in the U.S. in the early 20^th century, becoming an essential device in the many arctic expeditions that were taking place at the time. Its participation in reaching the South Pole, coupled with its noble stature and elegant coat, the breed was well-received in the U.S. Today the breed’s popularity grows worldwide.

Samoyed Character

The Samoyed needs to be treated more like a family member than a pet. It demands constant action and participation in family activities. If left out in the cold, the effects of which it will be virtually immune to, it will likely suffer separation anxiety. 

If not trained and cared for properly, this dog will let out its frustration with digging and barking. A characteristic of most members of the Spitz family, the Samoyed is hard-headed and sometimes difficult to train. But it is also very responsive and eager to please, so training is not an impossible endeavor. 

It likes to feel busy, enjoying activities like sled-pulling and herding children. This is a gentle breed, which makes it excellent around children and the elderly. It is friendly around strangers and other pets. If socialized, it will not be too difficult with strange dogs. 

If its exercise and attention requirements are fulfilled, the Samoyed is a noble addition to the family.

Samoyed Care

The Samoyed has a very thick coat, which requires much grooming. They shed heavily during warmer seasons and should be regularly brushed. The coat of this dog tends to trap dirt, but with regular brushing it should release easily.

Samoyed Training

This breed can be very willful and stubborn when it comes to obedience training but will do well with firm, consistent, and patient training techniques. Variety is best as Samoyeds can have a low attention span.
