Schipperke Overview

The energetic little Schipperke comes from the Spitz dog family, making it an ideal family pet. Originating as a watchdog and ratter in Belgium, they were created to form strong relationships with their owners. 

This is an inquisitive and adventurous breed, perpetually in a state of investigation. The ideal household for the Schipperke is a home with a sizeable backyard to explore and burn off energy. Farm life is also acceptable, but this breed may be too curious for its own good, wandering off to follow a scent and getting lost. 

Exercise is important for this dog, so only those who can devote time every day should own a dog like this. If not mentally and physically stimulated, Schipperkes will get bored and somewhat bratty. A fun game in the yard is all that’s needed, however, to keep this dog happy. 

Its thick coat does not have the grooming requirements one would expect; only needing to be brushed once per week, more when shedding. Schipperkes do not make good outdoor dogs, as they require the company of their family.

Schipperke History

The Schipperke’s origins are not ancient, but its exact ancestry is debated. While widely agreed that the breed came from Belgium, there is a dichotomy between the dog’s utility by sailors or by local land merchants. 

In Flemish, the word “schip” means “boat,” so it is theorized that the word “Schipperke” stands for “little boatman.” Another theory is that “Schipperke” is a derivation of “scheper,” meaning shepherd. As the Schipperke resembles a small version of the Belgian Sheepdog, it can be assumed that the breed came from specialized sheepdog breeding and not trade. 

Regardless of the debate, it is quite true that the Schipperke was an immensely popular dog. Official writings about the breed came in the late 17^th century, as it was featured in many writings. By the 1800s, the Schipperke was named the national dog of Belgium. This is not surprising, as it is said that the Schipperke was virtually the only housedog in the entire country. 

Unfortunately the breed’s popularity expanded in the late 19^th century, resulting in a declined interest in Belgium. Enthusiasts attempted to resurrect the breed, but it has never become as popular as it used to. Today the Schipperke enjoys a moderate number of supporters that is slowly rising.

Schipperke Character

Schipperkes are a big heart in a small body. They are bold and adventurous, always willing to do something new as long as it is mentally and physically beneficial. Training can be a chore, which is usual for the hard-headed Spitz. 

While intelligent and eager to please, it prefers to call the shots and be the leader of the pack. Productive, reward-based training is the best way for the Schipperke to learn. 

This dog is most happy when it can burn off energy while engaging in family activities. The best characteristic of the Schipperke is its ability to integrate into a family. While extremely protective and gentle with children, it will not tolerate being treated like a punching bag. If it does not receive the respect it requires, it will not be a happy dog. It is also not ideal for disabled or lethargic owners. 

It is a well-behaved breed in social situations, choosing to stay reserved around strange people or animals. This is a dog that cares little about making friends, because family is all that matters. Because of this, the Schipperke needs its time to be split between outside and inside; getting the exercise it needs while still participating in family life.

Schipperke Care

Combing or brushing with a firm bristle brush should be sufficient for this clean breed. Usually done on its own, dry shampooing is recommended only when necessary. Sheds heavily, also known as "blows" the coat up to three times per year. Dropping the undercoat, this breed requires much maintenance during this period.

Schipperke Training

The Schipperke requires firm yet gentle and consistent training. A very alert and energetic dog, this breed can be difficult to train as they have the tendency to lose interest fairly quickly. Given the proper training methods, and sometimes obedience classes, this breed can be very well mannered and polite.
