Scottish Terrier Overview

The Scottie is the most “Terrier” of the Terrier breeds. That is to say, it is arguably the most fiery, strong-willed Terrier of them all. 

While the bearded face may give the impression of a fastidious, humorless dog, it is actually a very lively and playful dog. 

An issue to consider is the dog’s attitude towards strangers. While it may be extremely loyal and friendly with its owner, it also has a tendency to be protective and skittish around visitors. 

Coat care is a heavy requirement. A special hard-bristled brush is needed to regularly strip down its coat, and another brush is needed for the beard and eyebrows, which can become dirty and harm the dog’s eyes. 

Scotties are not recommended for novice owners, as they are stubborn and territorial. But in the care of an experienced handler, the Scottish Terrier makes a dignified, infinitely loyal companion.

Scottish Terrier History

Although the Skye Terrier is considered the forerunner of the Terrier breed, enthusiasts argue that the Scottish Terrier is the foundation for all the other Highland terriers. 

The 1600s was a time when the Scottie became well-traveled. When Scotland was dominated by a strong English influence, this noble little dog was traded among aristocratic bodies in England and France as gifts. This model has been relatively unchanged over the centuries, as aficionados have kept the breed as pure as possible. 

Scotties were first displayed in shows at the end of the 19^th century, where a stringent rule-set for the breed was established. In the 20^th century, the Scottie became immensely popular worldwide for its limitless sense of dignity and pride.

Scottish Terrier Character

With a propensity for being hard-headed, training is a frustrating pursuit with a Scottish Terrier. Even with an established chain of command, the Scottie prefers to learn when it prefers, and will be virtually immune to any attempts to coax it into training. 

Immensely dignified, the Scottie will only acknowledge those who give it respect and who it respects in turn. Finally, harsh training will get its handler nowhere, as it will only encourage it to ignore orders. 

If the owner is the type of person who stays at work all day, then the Scottie’s independence and stubbornness will only be increased. 

Originally bred for hunting small game, it is likely that this breed will pose a threat to other small pets in the house. 

Only if socialized at a very young age will this dog be friendly with strangers and other dogs. If raised with a family, then the dog will be very faithful and protective. But they have a tendency to resent children, as they tend to draw attention from the dog. And because the Scottie is quite impatient, toddlers run the risk of nipped hands or worse if they get on the dog’s bad side. 

The Scottish Terrier is better suited for a single owner than a whole family. And if the owner is sufficiently skilled and firm, then they can have a very diligent and affectionate companion.

Scottish Terrier Care

The Scottish Terrier requires brushing twice weekly to keep the

coat tangle free. They do require grooming and trimming to keep their

distinctive look. The Scottie is highly prone to cancer of the bladder.

They also may suffer from cataracts, hypothyroidism, and Von Willebrand

Disease. This breed is especially sensitive to fleas and many have skin

problems.

Scottish Terrier Training

The Scottish Terrier does best with very early socialization

training to avoid aggression to other dogs' as they get older. Their

strong independence presents a training challenge. The Scottie can be

stubborn, so motivation, consistency, and positive praise are a must.

They do very well in obedience and agility if the proper training

techniques are utilized.
