Sealyham Terrier Overview

The Sealyham Terrier is one of the more reserved terrier breeds. It is highly affectionate, but its energy is lower than average. It easily adapts even in small apartments, only needing a short, daily walk to stay happy. A vigorous indoor game can also satisfy its exercise needs. As a natural born hunter, it will tune out its owner if an interesting smell catches its attention. Well-secured yards are a must. Grooming requirements are higher than average, only on account of its appearance. Two combings a week and an occasional clipping will preserve its appearance, but its pristine-white coat tends to show off every grain of dirt. Frequent baths are recommended. The Sealyham Terrier is a good introduction to the world of terriers. It is independent and fiery, but reserved enough for those uninitiated to the terrier club.

Sealyham Terrier History

Unreliable documentation exists that implies the Sealyham Terrier was imported to Wales in the 1400s. Official evidence places the breed in the 19th century. The cause of this earlier speculation lies with Captain John Edwardes, native to the Sealyham region. The Edwardes family was credited for developing an unnamed terrier breed centuries before Captain John was born. Nevertheless, it is the Captain who officially named the breed and introduced it to Wales. The Sealyham Terrier comes from an unknown mixture of past breeds. It is often speculated that the Dandie Dinmont Terrier may be its progenitor, but no solid proof exists. Regardless of its origin, the Sealyham Terrier was famous for its ability to hunt badger, fox, otter, and virtually any other small game native to the region. Furthering its popularity was its appearance in dog shows, where it was admired for its sharp and fashionable coat. Although this breed is a double-threat, its fame inexplicably declined in the 20th century. Today, the Sealyham Terrier impresses in both the show ring and field trials, but is rarely seen as a regular house pet.

Sealyham Terrier Character

The Sealyham Terrier is adventurous and investigative. Retaining the usual terrier independence, it entertains itself by digging, chasing, or exploring. Unlike usual terriers, this breed is also calm and restrained indoors. It is friendly towards humans and animals, preferring play over everything else. It is a hunter, however, and it will give chase to any small animal it sees. It is friendly around children, but too independent to be a playmate for toddlers. Stubborn as can be, the best method of training is to fool the dog into thinking it is having fun. Always dedicated to its family, it is nonetheless eager to please. The Sealyham Terrier is slightly calmer than conventional terriers, but still has the unique and endearing quirks that makes the group stand out.

Sealyham Terrier Care

The Sealyham Terrier requires professional trimming and stripping of the coat. They need to be brushed twice weekly to prevent mats from forming. Bathing should only be done when necessary using a mild shampoo. Dry shampoo as needed. This breed does best in cooler climates. Sealyham Terriers have very few health problems. They are allergic to fleas, are prone to deafness, and may have skin sensitivities.

Sealyham Terrier Training

The Sealyham Terrier has a tendency to be difficult to train. They are quick to learn, but may try to undermine their master's authority. They do well with early socialization and obedience training. Sealyham Terriers respond best to firm, fair, and consistent direction. They enjoy agility exercises and are enthusiastic participants in earth dog activities.
