Shar-Pei Overview

That apparent scowl on the Shar-Pei’s face is nothing to be alarmed about, it is simply a medium dog in the body of a large one. 

Originating among the peasant class in China, this dog was bred as an all-purpose hunter, guardian, and fighter. Like most breeds that had violent origins, the Shar-Pei fell by the wayside as dogfighting became illegal, and their only place was in the home of a loving family. 

At first glance, the dog obviously has an exaggerated appearance. Because of this, it is prone to a large number of skin-related health defects and sadly, it has a relatively short life expectancy. 

Coat maintenance is low, but it is important to take care in cleaning the many folds covering the dog’s body. If left unclean, the Shar-Pei can get eye and ear infections and bad rashes. 

Another problem is the breed’s fashionable reputation. High demand results in the growth of puppy mills that produce unhealthy animals. 

The dog’s personality is top notch, and it is an excellent family pet. If purchased from the right breeder, the Shar-Pei is an excellent member of the family.

Shar-Pei History

Dating back to the 13^th century, Shar-Peis were utilized by Chinese peasants for many things. Mostly used as a guard dog, the Shar-Pei’s super-thick skin made it ideal for dogfighting, as it would take a lot of work to bite through its leathery hide. 

The word “Shar-Pei” generally translates to a description of the dog’s bristly fur, meaning “sandy skin.” 

Little is known about the dog’s specific history, as the 20^th century’s communist regime in China attempted to systematically exterminate the breed along with other remaining bastions of the country’s dying imperial culture. Luckily, refugees managed to take some dogs to Korea, where they were exported to safe places like the U.S. 

A small “Save the Shar-Pei” movement in the 1970s was a great success, and the breed’s existence was preserved. One year later, the Shar-Pei was accepted into the AKC.

Shar-Pei Character

Socialization is key with the Shar-Pei, as guard dogs should be eased out of their overly protective instincts. While not an overly mellow dog, the Shar-Pei lacks the out of control rowdiness that plagues other dogs of its size, making it a gentle and affectionate companion for children. 

It can adapt to any lifestyle, even apartment living, if it receives enough exercise. But the dog is not completely docile, however. Shar-Peis are designed to attach to their owners like most lapdogs, so leaving them by their lonesome for long periods will cause stress. 

Dignified in spite of its goofy appearance, this breed can be easily trained if mutual respect is established. A gentle hand and strong leadership will result in a very smart and highly trainable pet, provided the training methods are not repetitive or boring. 

Their behavior is average in regard to other animals. This dog’s skittish guarding instinct requires early socialization, and they may not be entirely trustworthy around other animals. 

Shar-Peis are goofy, fashionable pets that are ideal for a family in search of a laid-back, gentle member of the family.

Shar-Pei Care

The coat of the Chinese Shar-Pei is not very high maintenance, however it should be brushed to remove loose or dead hair occasionally. A rubber brush should suffice. The ears should be cleaned regularly as well as under the folds of skin.

Shar-Pei Training

The Chinese Shar-Pei can be stubborn at times, making him somewhat hard to handle when it comes to training. However, he is very willing to please and is intelligent. Firm handling should be practiced with this breed.
