Shetland Sheepdog Overview

Essentially a miniaturized Rough Collie, the Shetland Sheepdog possesses many of the larger breed’s qualities. 

Because it is part of the herding breed, the dog is a gifted athlete and strong learner. It has the potential of being a great family pet, but with reservations. 

As its beautiful coat and noble stance indicate, the Shetland Sheepdog is a no-nonsense, all-business breed. Do not expect to roughhouse or rile up this dog, for it will get frustrated and leave rather than demean itself. Harassment from small children may cause the dog to nip or attempt to dominate. 

But in a quiet, placid household, the Shetland Sheepdog is an excellent part of the family. An owner that dislikes grooming should be wary about this dog, as its long coat requires a good amount of upkeep.

Shetland Sheepdog History

The Shetland Sheepdog originated in the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland. The breed most likely received its smaller size through cross-breeding with dogs indigenous to the islands. 

There are no official records describing the dog’s origins in any specific date, due to the islands’ obscurity from travel. Because of the relative solitude of the islands, Shelties did not appear to the mainstream until the early 20^th century in England. 

From there, its popularity quickly spread around the world, resulting in numerous clubs that held the breed in its highest regard. 

The AKC recognized the Shetland Sheepdog in 1911, winning multiple awards in spite of the strict size requirements placed on it. 

Shetland Sheepdog Character

The Shetland Sheepdog takes itself quite seriously. Naturally shy and gentle around other dogs, early socialization is essential if the owner prefers a friendly pet. 

Ironically, this is a breed that prefers brains over brawn in spite of its highly physical origin as a herder. They have a strong instinct to chase, so a leash is necessary when going on walks. 

There is a strong possibility that the Sheepdog will become clingy and demanding, posing a hefty danger to the house if left alone too long. 

With a virtually limitless capacity to learn, however, this breed is award-bound if properly trained to be in obedience competitions. 

It is recommended that gentle training methods be used, for the dog is very sensitive to stress. Aggressive or harsh methods will only make the dog more difficult to train.

 If one were to describe the Sheltie in one word, it would be “intelligent” and the ideal home for this dog is one where its smarts will be put to use.

Shetland Sheepdog Care

Regular brushing is necessary to keep the coat smooth and free of tangles. The long coat of the Sheltie does tend to trap dirt so supervision is necessary unless regular bathing is not a problem. Heavily shedding during certain seasons, the hair can become a mess so grooming is particularly important during this stage.

Shetland Sheepdog Training

The Sheltie is very easy to train and does very well in obedience and herding given the right methods and trainer. Having a human like intelligence, Shetland Sheepdogs are willing to obey, and very eager to do so. Does very well in working environments being that the herding instinct is still very strong.
