Silky Terrier Overview

The Silky Terrier, among the other Terrier breeds, is most frequently associated as being pampered and bratty.  While it is true that it tends toward stubbornness, it is simply a result of its Terrier origin and not a particularly bad character trait. 

The grooming requirements of this breed are moderate. 

This is not a dignified, reserved animal. The Silky Terrier is highly energetic and bold breed, ideally suited for those who can appreciate the Terrier attitude.

Silky Terrier History

It may come to a surprise that the Silky Terrier originated in Australia, although it is quite unlike the rugged-looking Australian Cattle Dog. They originated in the late 19^th Century, when Yorkies from England made their way to Australia. They were bred with the native Australian Terriers in an attempt to make them sturdier but retain the same black coat color. The result was seen as an entirely unique breed, and they were marketed as Silky Terriers by the end of the century. 

The beginning of the 20^th century saw the creation of two breed standards which conflicted on many physical characteristics, such as weight and color. Originally known as the Australian Silky Terrier, its name changed to simply “Silky Terrier” as it was recognized by the AKC in 1955. Today the breed enjoys moderate popularity.

Silky Terrier Character

In regard to this breed’s “Terrier-ness,” that is to say their bold and fiery attitude, the Silky Terrier ranks up with them all. Prospective owners should not let the pristine coat fool them, for this dog is always eager for action.

It likes to be the boss in one way or another, so it tends to be dominant with dogs and aggressive towards children. 

Because the breed’s original purpose was ratting, it is not recommended to leave them alone with smaller pets. 

Those who enjoy peace and quiet should reconsider getting a Silky, as they tend to bark and make their presence heard. This breed is slightly easier to train than other members of its family, but sticklers for obedience are bound to be disappointed. 

While not a particularly destructive dog, a Silky will still become bossy and aggravated if ignored. Among the seemingly endless number of Terrier breeds, the Silky has little to differentiate itself in terms of personality. But for those who enjoy its elegant look, they will find that it is a true Terrier with a larger than life personality.

Silky Terrier Care

The Silky Terrier's coat is highly susceptible to tangles and matting. They require daily brushing and combing. This breed requires a deep commitment from their owners. To keep the coat lustrous regular shampooing is necessary. The Silky is prone to several disorders including luxating patella, tracheal collapse, and epilepsy.

Silky Terrier Training

This breed may be difficult to housebreak. They respond best to praise, reward, love and consistency. The Silky Terrier does well in

obedience training provided the method used is not done using a choke collar. The Silky trachea is easily damaged. Training must be done

firmly and fairly.
