Skye Terrier Overview

One of the more house-friendly terriers, the Skye is a relatively mellow pet. Though still a terrier at heart, this breed is content with an occasional game or daily walk to stay content. Because of its size and moderate exercise needs, it can easily adapt to most living conditions, as long as it gets the attention it deserves. Coat care is moderate, only needing to be combed twice weekly. Trimming around the face is also required. Some may try to soften its coat with a special shampoo or dog conditioner, but it will only get slightly softer at best. The Skye Terrier should be described as a terrier for beginners. It retains the group’s feisty and courageous demeanor, without the excess energy.

Skye Terrier History

Hailing from Scotland, the Skye Terrier is one of the oldest terrier breeds from the region. The breed was renowned for its fox and otter hunting abilities since the 16th century, when it was admired for its long coat. The breed earned its name after the Isle of Skye, where the best and brightest originated. History places the breed in the 1500s, but not until the 1840s did they make an impact on European culture. Queen Victoria was a frequent endorser of the Skye, both the floppy and pointy-eared versions. Naturally, this recommendation made its way overseas, and the AKC recognized the breed in 1887. Long-admired in the show ring, the breed’s popularity declined in the 20th century. Today, the Skye Terrier is one of the rarest breeds of dog. However, a Skye by the name Greyfriar’s Bobby is commemorated for its loyalty. It is said he slept on his master’s grave for over a decade, then was buried on the place where he held his vigil. His statue is a testament to the unwavering loyalty of the Skye Terrier.

Though slightly more manageable than better-known terriers, the Skye is still an entertaining and independent companion. Tougher than it looks, a quality shared by most terriers, this breed is hardy enough to endure any physical activity. Its low exercise requirements, however, make it just as happy indoors. This makes it good for the outgoing owner, as well as those who are more withdrawn. It needs more socialization than most dogs, because it does not prefer the company of strangers, animal or human. A tried and true watchdog, the Skye Terrier puts its family before all else. It gets along with children, but it may be too independent to be a reliable playmate. If given the chance, it will chase small animals endlessly. Training is moderately easy, as long as it is given a reason to obey. The Skye Terrier, while very polite indoors, is still a terrier at heart. It is best suited for any owner who can appreciate its personality.

The Skye Terrier requires frequent brushing with a pin brush or metal comb to prevent matting. Bathing should only be done when necessary. It is important to keep the ears cleaned as well as the hair around the mouth and eyes. They Skye do not generally suffer from many health problems. However, they may be prone to slipped disk problems.

The Skye Terrier requires intense and extensive early socialization training to reduce their aloofness. They do not do well with long and repetitive sessions for they will become bored. They respond best to firm boundaries, positive reinforcement, consistency, and loving direction. The Skye excels in tracking, obedience, and agility.
