Spinone Italiano Overview

The Spinone (pronounced spi-no-nay) Italiano is a sporting breed that is light on “sport.” It is bold, athletic, and eternally devoted, but it is less energetic than other pointers. It requires daily exercise, but not to the extent of other dogs in the sporting group. A good bout of free-running in a well-fenced area is sufficient to keep this dog happy and healthy. Though it may look otherwise, the grooming requirements for this breed are relatively low. All it needs is a weekly brushing to remove dead hair, and periodic stripping of the coat to keep it smooth and neat. With a weather-resistant coat, the Spinone can live primarily outdoors. But this is a social dog, so it can live virtually anywhere as long as it can participate in family activities.

Spinone Italiano History

One of the earlier pointers, the Spinone Italiano originated in 13th century Italy. Its precise origin is a mystery, but it is generally assumed that its ancestors came to Italy by way of Greek traders at the height of the Roman Empire. Though its origins are the stuff of theory, the breed’s purpose is well-known. This wirehaired pointer was primarily utilized in rough, mountainous regions, where small game and birds preferred to hide in thorny bushes. Its name, Spinone, is a derivation of the word spino, which is Italian for thorn bush. With its reputation firmly established, the breed was used during World War II to track enemy patrols. Unfortunately, its widespread use in the war led to near-extinction, as enemies would single out this particular breed and kill it on sight. The remaining Spinones were adopted by enthusiasts and interbred for the sake of preservation. Though breeders meant well, it further endangered the Spinone, because its specific characteristics began to vanish. In the 1950s, more care was given toward the breed’s preservation, so a breeding rule-set was established. Today, the breed is immensely popular in Europe and the Mediterranean, but it is only modestly popular in the U.S. The Spinone Italiano was recognized by the AKC in 2000. The breed is commonly used as a house dog and in hunting competitions.

There is little to disagree with when it comes to the Spinone Italiano. It is loyal, devoted, gentle, and biddable. Be it strangers, other dogs and animals, or children, this dog is gentle and friendly if socialized at a young age. It may be too boisterous for children, however, so play should be monitored. The breed is more easygoing than others, as long as it gets the appropriate amount of time with the family. While it can adapt to outdoor life, that does not mean it can get by without human interaction. If lonely and bored, the Spinone may become destructive to keep itself occupied. This breed is eager to please, so training is moderately easy as long as its owner can establish authority. The Spinone Italiano is an ideal companion for most prospective owners. It is lively and devoted enough for a single individual, and it is friendly and gentle enough to be a family pet.

This breed requires weekly brushing as well as occasional professional stripping of the coat. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary to preserve the integrity of the coat. The Spinone Italiano is typically a healthy breed but may be prone to hip dysplasia, bloating, or an inherited disease called Cerebellar Ataxia which causes an abnormal gait.

The Spinone Italiano is quick to learn, but may be stubborn about performing their master's commands. They have a mind of their own and often want to make their own decisions regarding tasks assigned to them. Spinone Italianos must have proper socialization training to prevent timidity. They are very sensitive and do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. They require motivation, positive reinforcement, respect, patience, and consistency.
