Standard Schnauzer Overview

The Standard Schnauzer is a lively, energetic dog that prides itself on guarding its family. Its attitude needs to be wrangled a bit, but it is otherwise a highly affectionate and fun-loving dog. 

These dogs have a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, so it is important to keep them entertained even after daily exertion. Free-running should be ruled out, however, as this breed enjoys chasing other animals. 

Grooming requirements are high. Its rough coat needs to be brushed every 2-3 days, and it needs to be stripped every 3 months. Furthermore, it is recommended that the dog receive professional clipping as often as its coat needs to be stripped. 

The Standard Schnauzer is a healthy, long-lived companion for active owners with a sense of humor.

Standard Schnauzer History

The Standard Schnauzer is the oldest of the three types of Schnauzers, and is the foundation for the Miniature and Giant Schnauzers. First appearing in the 1300s (perhaps even before), these dogs made ideal ratters and guard dogs for German families. They are likely the product of cross-breeding between wolf spitz and various pinschers.  

Initially grouped with Wirehaired Pinschers in the late 1800s, they quickly gained recognition as a separate breed. And while the breed was less popular among American dog enthusiasts, it won the hearts of many Europeans, earning a hefty reputation by the turn of the century. 

Originally classified as Terriers, Standard Schnauzers proved themselves as workers during World War I, and it was moved into that category shortly afterward. 

Like its bigger sibling, the Giant Schnauzer, the Standard is frequently used in Germany as a police dog. Today the breed is slightly less popular than its bigger and smaller family members. 

Standard Schnauzer Character

While the Standard Schnauzer is a stoic guardian, it also has its clownish side. With high energy and an appeasing attitude, this breed often likes to entertain itself by entertaining its owner. It needs attention and affection, and it would be cruel to keep this dog in the backyard all the time. 

These dogs thrive on the companionship of their owners, and they need to be able to participate in family activities as often as possible. Training is of average difficulty. It is easy enough to learn basic house rules and general obedience, but a bit more effort is needed for competitions. 

Eternally devoted to its family, this dog is very gentle with children and friendly with other pets. It is playful with strange dogs, but it is likely to chase smaller animals. Strangers, however, may pose a problem. 

As an effective guard and watchdog, this breed tends to be overprotective and aggressive towards strange people. This may be a good thing for some, but it is important to consider. 

The Standard Schnauzer is an extremely affectionate and devoted family dog, but its behavior around strangers should be noted.

Standard Schnauzer Care

The Standard Schnauzer requires daily brushing and combing to keep the under coat free of mats and tangles. A short wire brush works best. The hair around the eyes and ears must be kept trimmed. Professional all-over clipping should be done in the twice a year. It is important to clean the whiskers after meals. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. The Standard Schnauzer is generally healthy but may be prone to minor eye problems and hip dysplasia.

Standard Schnauzer Training

Demanding and willful, this breed requires a firm and dominant owner. They need intensive and extensive early socialization and obedience training. The Standard Schnauzer responds best to fairness, firmness, consistency, and patience. They excel in search and rescue, agility, competitive obedience, and military work. They have also been used successfully as therapy dogs.
