Tibetan Terrier Overview

There are so few “Terrier” characteristics to the Tibetan Terrier, it should only be referred by that name as a formality. The breed has more sheepdog qualities than anything else, and it does not have the firebrand personality traits that characterize the Terrier breed. 

It is a family-oriented dog, reserved indoors and boisterous outdoors. It needs daily exercise to stay healthy, but it also needs the company of its owners to stay happy. 

Grooming can be a chore, as this dog needs to be brushed multiple times per week. Its long, shaggy coat tends to pick up dirt. Certainly not an “outside dog,” the Tibetan Terrier is a biddable, sensitive, and affectionate family pet that needs to divide its time between the yard and living room.

Tibetan Terrier History

With its specific origin lost to ancient writings, it is said the breed came about as protectors of Tibetan monasteries over 2000 years ago. They were also apt workers, tending the fields and herding cattle. 

Sometimes kept as good luck charms and considered holy dogs, there is little doubt how the breed was viewed so long ago. But that mythic treatment only complicates the dog’s true history. It has been said that the dog originated in a “Lost Valley” that was sealed from the rest of the world in a 14^th century earthquake. The breed spread across Asia as gifts between royalty and traveling monks, and they were never sold or traded. 

In 1920, an Indian doctor named Grieg was given one of these dogs in return for treatment, and he set out to promote it worldwide. 

After building a strong foundation in India, the breed made its way to England in 1937, where it leap-frogged to the U.S. thirteen years later. By 1973 it was recognized by the AKC, receiving moderate worldwide popularity. 

The only logical reason for the breed’s Terrier affiliation is its generally equal size to the average Terrier.   

Tibetan Terrier Character

The Tibetan Terrier’s name is quite misleading. This dog is not independent, nor does it have an outrageous personality. It is reserved and polite, preferring to receive love rather than demand it. 

The breed is somewhat adventurous, always willing to accompany its owners in family activities. But it is not a forceful pet, and it will not destroy the furniture out of boredom. 

Always willing to please, the Tibetan is much easier to train than the average Terrier. If learning begins at a young age, it can learn to excel in obedience and agility competitions. Socialization should begin at a young age as well. Mature Tibetans are friendly around other dogs and strange people, but they must be taught to be gentle with cats and other pets. 

They are great with children, although they tend to be too boisterous for toddlers. The Tibetan Terrier is an ideal family pet that has a strong grasp on self-control. With the proper training and socialization, it can be an extremely well-behaved dog.

Tibetan Terrier Care

The Tibetan Terrier requires extensive grooming. They must be combed several times a week to prevent tangles and remove loose hair. The coat must never be dry combed. It is important to mist the coat with conditioner before combing to prevent breakage. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo. Dry shampooing may be done as needed. Tibetan Terriers are prone to hip dysplasia, hernias, cataracts, lens luxation, and progressive retinal atrophy.

Tibetan Terrier Training

This breed learns very quickly and is extremely eager to please. They have a self-reliant and independent nature that may lead them to avoid doing things they've already learned. They benefit from early socializations and obedience. The Tibetan Terrier will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. They do best with positive reinforcement, consistency, patience, and respectful loving direction.
