Vizsla Overview

This obscure Hungarian dog has been a favored working breed since the Middle Ages. Its highly athletic body and affinity for learning has made it a jack of all trades. 

Not ideal for every owner, this dog tends to be highly sensitive and excitable. Only owners with plenty of exercise room should consider this incredibly sporty dog. Testament to its abilities, a well-fenced yard is required, for this dog can effortlessly leap over six feet if it becomes bored and feels the wanderlust. 

With an affectionate personality, this dog is great for family life. But its highly sensitive and demanding nature could lead to a spoiled and obnoxious pet. Only active families should consider the Vizsla, because it thrives on exercise, attention, and play.

Vizsla History

While shrouded in obscurity, it is safely estimated that the first Hungarian Pointer arrived around the 2^nd century A.D. A 14^th century Hungarian manuscript contains an image similar to the Vizsla, and it was favored among aristocrats who had endless acres of land for the dog to roam. 

The dog was specially bred to be fleet-footed but quiet, ambushing game and chasing them in the direction of armed hunters. 

The breed nearly met extinction in the ravages of World Wars I and II, but Hungarian refugees managed to bring their dogs to Russia, where they were cultivated and exported around the world. 

The first Vizslas arrived in the U.S. in the 1950s, almost immediately resulting in the Vizsla Club of America in 1954. Repeated wins in athletic and obedience competitions proved a force to be reckoned with on the field, and the dog’s popularity boomed for training enthusiasts. 

Today, the Vizsla is used in virtually all working conditions, including law enforcement, service for the disabled, and search and rescue.

Vizsla Character

With the Vizsla, it is the duty of the owner to ensure this dog is thoroughly entertained. If bored, this dog will use its Olympian abilities to run amok. It cannot be stressed enough that this dog is not recommended for a laid back owner. This dog needs to play fetch, go on hikes, swim, or generally prance around for hours on end. 

Generally friendly around other animals, it cannot be forgotten that the Vizsla is a hunter at heart, so small animals should be kept away from this dog. This breed is extremely sensitive and friendly, so there is little concern about aggression. But it can still injure small children and the elderly during rambunctious play. 

If the owner prefers a quiet home, then the Vizsla is not the ideal dog. It sometimes forgets it is a dog and not a person, and it will attempt to engage in conversation if encouraged. 

Training is quite easy and fun with this dog, but its clownish personality leads it to be distracted easily. Rough training will be counterproductive, and patience is essential. With good training and boredom prevention, the Vizsla is a light-hearted, intelligent, and highly affectionate member of the family.

Vizsla Care

The Vizsla's coat requires very minimal care. They need to be brushed occasionally with a firm bristle brush and dry shampooed when necessary. Bathing should only be done with a mild soap so as not to strip the coat the protective oils. It is important to keep their nails trimmed. The Vizsla is generally healthy, but has a tendency toward hemophilia and hip dysplasia. They do not tolerate cold climates.

Vizsla Training

The Vizsla needs both socialization and obedience training at an early age. Owners of this breed must make their authority clear right from the start. They are eager to please and quick to learn. The Vizsla displays their talents in the areas of tracking, pointing, retrieving, and competitive obedience. Harsh methods of training will ruin this breed. They need firm, fair, and consistent training.
