Though slightly less boisterous than the English variation, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is rarely laid back. Exercise requirements are moderate, but this hardy and handsome breed is always ready for a vigorous play session. It is independent, but prefers to be around its family as a watchdog and heartfelt protector. An ideal home for this breed is one where it can spend the day outside and the night inside. A daily hike or walk around the block is enough to keep this dog fit. Attention must be paid to grooming. Welsh Springer Spaniel History

The Welsh Springer Spaniel’s history is said to date back to the 14th century, but no official records appeared until the 17th century. The breed is mentioned in old books of Welsh Law, but it could be referencing an older breed with the same name. The precise heritage of this breed is widely disputed. Some believe it came directly from the English Springer, while others believe it is a cross between English and Clumber Spaniels. Another complicating factor is that land spaniels were used in Wales for centuries, but the official name “Welsh Springer Spaniel” did not originate until the 1600s. Like most dogs with similar histories, the English and Welsh Spaniels were grouped under the same category in dog shows. It arrived in the U.S. at the beginning of the 20th century, and was granted AKC recognition in 1906. But its popularity was virtually nonexistent, and the breed nearly went extinct in America. The Welsh Springer Spaniel never achieved widespread popularity, but it enjoys a strong following in Wales.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a self-controlled, affectionate, and intelligent breed. It is always eager to please, and it prefers the company of its family. Easygoing compared to other spaniels, the Welsh Springer is nonetheless an eager, athletic animal. It will take full advantage if given a yard, eagerly engaging in play sessions or simply bounding around for the fun of it. If given the opportunity to hunt, this dog will never disappoint. Family comes first for this breed, so it tends to be aloof around strangers. But it will warm up to regular visitors with time. Other dogs and animals are not bothersome to this dog, and it can share the home with enough socialization. Training is simple enough. The Welsh Springer Spaniel is eager to please, so teaching it is relatively unproblematic. It is a sensitive dog, so harsh training methods are counterproductive.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel requires regular brushing with a stiff bristle brush. Special care must be given during shedding. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when necessary. It is important to regularly check and clean the ears. This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and entropion.
