Welsh Terrier Overview

The Welsh Terrier is an energetic, playful breed. While its personality is a bit milder, it is nonetheless a feisty, clownish dog. 

Originally meant for hunting small game, such as rats, otters, and foxes, this is a breed that requires regular exercise to stay happy. Its thick, wiry coat requires a lot of care, needing to be brushed three times per week. On top of that, the coat needs to be shaped four times annually either by clipping or stripping. It is important to note that clipping changes the color of the coat and softens it slightly. 

A people oriented breed, this dog requires the company of its owners more than anything else. It does not adapt well to apartment life. The ideal home for this breed is one with a good backyard or at least a nearby park. 

For active individuals or families, the Welsh Terrier is a smart companion with a lot of personality.

Welsh Terrier History

Another descendent of the Black and Tan Terrier, the Welsh originated in 18^th century Wales. There were two dogs in the North Wales region at that time, the “Old English Terrier” and a particular type of Otterhound. These breeds were so similar they competed as one or the other, succeeding every time. Eventually they were clumped into the same classification, earning the name Welsh Terrier. 

The original Welsh were too rugged for the show ring, so a ‘softer’ version was desired. Through selective breeding with Wire Fox and Airedale Terriers, breeders were met with success. At the end of the 19^th century, the Welsh Terrier found its place among the more glamorous show dogs. Today it enjoys moderate popularity worldwide, falling behind its better-known Terrier brethren.

Welsh Terrier Character

Relatively mild and polite compared to other Terriers, the Welsh is a regal, hard-working companion that likes to keep busy. It is best to include it in family activities, as this breed does not like to be left out. Very much a people-dog, it is happiest in the company of its owners. 

Around strangers, however, it can be reserved and aggressively protective. The same problem goes with strange dogs, although not as extreme. The Welsh likes to be the center of attention and it doesn’t care much for other pets. They can be aggressive and domineering with youngsters and pets. 

If left on its own, a Welsh will become quite a handful -- almost as if it is looking for trouble. It will bark and dig to its heart’s content, likely to get on a neighbor’s nerves. 

But in spite of its differences, the Welsh is still a Terrier at heart. Often feisty and mischievous, this is a difficult breed to train. While it may not be impossible, it would be a stressful endeavor to create an obedience champion. 

Prospective owners should have a good sense of humor. The Welsh Terrier may be a challenging personality, but it is also an affectionate one that behaves in the right situations.

Welsh Terrier Care

The Welsh Terrier should have at least weekly brushing to remove loose or dead hair. Regular bathing is not necessary, however a wipe down with a damp or dry washcloth should remove most dirt, if any. The beard of this breed should be cleaned regularly.

Welsh Terrier Training

Being a terrier and of high energy, this breed should always have a variety of training methods. A firm yet gentle hand is a must, and the handler should always remain consistent. Given the proper training, this breed does very well in obedience, agility, and flyball.
